Ecumenical Holy Week Services at First United Methodist

April 11 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 12:00pm, repeating until April 14, 2017

Join congregations from around the city for ecumenical Holy Week services at First United Methodist Church each day at noon from Monday, April 10 to Friday, April 14.  Friday’s service will include music provided by area church choirs performing Dan Forrest’s When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.

From the First United Methodist Church website:
“This continues a tradition started in 1974, where congregations come together for a daily service leading up to Good Friday. In this, the 43rd year, guest preachers will be Elizabeth Ide (Lawrence Unitarian Universalist Church), Debbie Garber (West Side Presbyterian Church), Piet Knetsch (Central United Methodist Church) and Verdell Taylor (St. Luke’s African Methodist Episcopal Church). Each day of Holy Week will include a short service of worship, about 30-35 minutes. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, the service will be followed by a simple soup and sandwich lunch. The churches providing lunch this year include First United Methodist, Central United Methodist, First Baptist, West Side Presbyterian, First Presbyterian, and Plymouth Congregational. [First Baptist Church will provide lunch on Monday, April 10. Contact Dava Cooper to sign up to provide food for this lunch.] An offering in support of the Lawrence Ministerial Emergency Fund will be collected each day. The Emergency Fund provides grants to families and individuals who secure new housing following a period of time where they have been homeless. The Emergency Fund works with the city’s Homeless Outreach Team in identifying those people who have been evicted and are reestablishing housing options.”
