Morning Prayer

Lord, make us thankful.
Lord, make us thoughtful.
Help us to be thankful for the homes that we have. As we settle in for that extra piece of pie this week, and watch the flurry of activity around the Thanksgiving dinner, we pause to say thank you. For the place to eat, to cook, to relax, even to watch some football. For our homes and our security. For our church home this season, a place to worship and fellowship and welcome the stranger. Help us to be thankful.

And help us to be thoughtful of those who do not have such a luxury. Those who will be homeless this Thanksgiving, yearning for a place to call their own. Those who flee their homes and countries due to violence or political insecurity, especially those who find themselves turned away wherever they try to settle. Or those who sleep uneasy in their homes, afraid that one lost paycheck, or another lost job, could mean disaster. Help us to be thoughtful this season.
Help us to be thankful for the families that we have. Even when we get into a tussle over politics while passing the cranberry sauce, may we pause to be thankful for every grandfather, aunt, cousin, and child who joins us at the table.

And help us to be thoughtful of those who yearn or grieve for such a family. For every spouse still hurting because they are alone during the holidays. For every woman who wishes she could be a mother and every man who wishes he could be a father. For everyone who struggles with loneliness this season, help us to be thoughtful.
Help us to be thankful for the gifts that we have received. Even when it feels like the paycheck doesn’t stretch to the end of the month, and the financial decisions are harder than they should be. Even when a ten percent tithe feels like a pipe dream, help us to be thankful. Help us live lives of abundance and not fear, of gratitude and not envious comparison.

And, of course, help us to be thoughtful for those who are in need more than we have ever been. Let us follow the words of your prophet and give away one coat when we have two, and follow the words of your son and care for the needs of the least of these.

Lord, make us thankful.
Lord, make us thoughtful.
