July Worship Series: “Whose Kingdom is it Anyway?”

In the middle of Matthew, there is a string of parables of Jesus about “the kingdom.” This concept seemed to be a bit confusing for the people who followed Jesus, because he worked often to try to help them understand what it meant. The same concept seems to still be confusing for the people who follow Jesus, as we continue to struggle with exactly what Jesus was talking about and what it means for us today. For Jesus, it seemed to have clear political ramifications. Imagine if Jesus spoke today in parallel terms of “nation” or “state” or even “authority of the president.” We don’t have a king in the United States, but we do have a clear socio-political power structure that would sit up and notice if crowds of people began to follow someone claiming to offer an alternative to that power structure. And yet, Jesus doesn’t seem to use political terms or concepts to talk about the kingdom. Instead, he uses examples from creation, often specifically agrarian images: seeds, weeds, wheat.

So, what are we to make of this political upstart who challenges the status quo with stories about yeast and thorns?

That is the question that we will wrestle with in the coming weeks. It’s not exactly light summer fare, is it? But then again, we aren’t exactly living in light and breezy days. Perhaps the weight of kingdom speak is exactly what we need to talk about in the midst of a world full of racial tension, political and economic chaos, and global pandemic. Perhaps now more than ever we should be asking, “whose kingdom is it anyway?”
