Earthworks Team Purple Talk: Safer Passages for Migrating Birds with Krystal Anton

May 31, 2025 @ 4:00 pm 5:00 pm CDT

Learn how you can help migratory birds make their journey safer! Johnson County Community College’s Krystal Anton will speak about their bird strike study and lessons learned from it over the last seven years. This talk will also cover the effects of light pollution and how it is related to window strikes and the health of birds, as well as ways you can mitigate these issues at home and work. Join us in person in the Sojourners Room or on Zoom (request link here).

Since 2015, Krystal Anton has been the Zero Waste Coordinator in The Center for Sustainability at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. Krystal oversees a staff of interns who operate the onsite food waste composting program, and all specialty recycling programs. She also educates and supports departments and staff across campus to implement sustainable practices in their daily work life.

After noticing several dead birds on campus, Krystal designed a formal bird window strike study for the campus in 2018 and implemented ongoing mitigation starting in 2019. The study continues to monitor bird collisions every year.

She has held various presentations for Audubon associations, the Johnson County Sierra Club, other universities and more, and earlier this month, she taught a class, Bird-Friendly Built Environments: Preventing Bird Deaths Through Design, at Nooniversity for the
American Institute of Architects Kansas City.
