The Cup Plant – Silphium perfoliatum
The Cup Plant, Silphium perfoliatum, is a native perennial plant in the aster family. You can find this 5-ft tall plant with yellow, composite flower heads near the east end of the garden. Take a closer look! Why is it called the cup plant? Those triangular leaves around the stem make a little cup and hold water after a rainfall. That water attracts insects like butterflies and even birds to take a sip.
Our next pollinator garden workday is Saturday, September 19 at 9 am. We could use your help to shovel some mulch! Bring your work gloves, water bottle, sunscreen, and tools that may be helpful (shovel, rake, etc.)
